There is another major wildcard I think. Since the http://blog.shunya.net/shunyas_blog/2006/12/america_and_the_1.html>Afghan War, the Pakistani army and the fundamentalists have been less separate than most western analysts think. As this http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_qa3821/is_200604/ai_n17179259/pg_15>article suggests, fundamentalism can grow and split up the rank and file in the army. Some of the troops may refuse to strike the jihadis. This can greatly disempower the army, the only durable institution Pakistan has known. What happens next?

New Book by Namit Arora

  • The Lottery of Birth reveals Namit Arora to be one of our finest critics. In a raucous public sphere marked by blame and recrimination, these essays announce a bracing sensibility, as compassionate as it is curious, intelligent and nuanced.” —Pankaj Mishra
