I didn't see this Monday on 3QD! There can be too much going on there on a Monday. I'll just go right back and comment there, but first -- what a good essay. There's just so much Britney to fight, in order to get read...

Immensely well written essay!

While I am sure the fact of the US supporting elitist and not revolutionary struggles is a well established fact, I think they really messed it up with the high of seeing success in Afghanistan. Unlike most parts of the world, the truly unorganized nature of Afghan society and governance(outside of the big cities) meant that a elitist revolution couldn't work, and any pouring in of weapons could only lead to a vicious shake up of the existing power structure. My readings suggest they armed anyone who was willing to take up arms, including moderates and leftists among the mujahideen.
