Namit,

I am glad that Ian Jack pointed this out.

This fact about Churchill is little known to most Americans who lionize him as the great defender of liberty and enemy of fascism. I suspect that the younger generation of British public also probably is not aware of how contradictory Churchill's views were regarding keeping Europe safe from the Nazis but Asia and Africa firmly under the thumb (boots?) of Europeans. Eleanore Roosevelt was among the few Americans who saw through this hypocritical discordance in Churchill's stance on human rights and civil liberties and called him out on it, much to the embarrassment of her husband FDR who liked the Prime Minister and was persuaded by him to join hands with the British during WWII.

I am going to post the link to Jack's article on my Facebook and perhaps even on A.B.
