I was at the museum a few weeks ago. Quite a good place to visit, especially if you are interested in Indian subcontinent sculpture from the pre-Muslim period.

For me, the highlight of the museum was the fairly complete representation of the range of Buddhist iconography. You can trace the changes in the Buddha's facial features along with the place where the sculptures originated. The characteristic folds of the Buddha's robe and the hair bun on top of his head, which the Gandhara school borrowed from the Greeks, persist even in Japanese representations from centuries later.

The docent-led tour is not bad, particularly if you can learn to put up with the pronunciation of words such as 'Buddha' and 'Dharma'. The display commentaries are quite well-written, especially the introductory ones on the South Asia floor.

The 'Persian World and West Asia' section is quite small as of now.

The South Asia gallery is good indeed but a bigger revelation for me was the 2500-3500 year old Chinese antiquities (and a few over 5000 years old), which I found to be remarkably sophisticated (musical instruments, wine and food vessels, etc.), not to mention the jades. This was my second afternoon there in a month and I still haven't made it down from the top floor. :-) The South Asia display commentaries are good too, much better than every museum I've seen in India, where one needs to be a student of art history to understand the context.
